Defence Walls

We have been trying to get out of the house and actually walk around the entire Nuremberg Imperial Castle on the outside of the defence walls.  This will not be a quick walk, I think it will take at least 2 hours.  The idea behind this exercise is to take a photo of every know defence and watch tower that was built to protect the caste.  There used to be 105 of these towers, I am not sure how many of them remain.  Now that autumn is here and most of the trees have dropped their leaves a lot of the smaller towers are now visible.   Towers aside,  the castle is protected by a massive amount of defence walls and numerous canals and the moat. The whole site is quite breath taking.  We have seen a number of very impressive castles on this trip. I often wonder what it was like a few hundred years ago for the soldiers dressed in some leathers, with a shield and a stick for a spear who were told to storm the castle.  It seems impossible and yet a lot of these castles fell during the siege.
