St. Jacobs

Across the square from St. Elisabeth Church is St. Jacobs Church.  The Gothic old-Franconian Church of St. James was originally  the hospice church for the German Order. The original building was erected in mid to late 14th century. The Church was badly damaged during the war and was rebuilt with some alterations. The nave houses some remarkable works of art. The late Gothic “Twelve Messenger Altar” has lively, expressive groups of figures. Close to the chancel arch the most impressive sculpture is the “Mourning of Christ” by an unknown wood carver from around 1500.

We went into both of these while we visited last summer during a rainy afternoon. I liked the round one – there was a massive amount of incense in the air though.
